The 2014 Franchise is Official

Lane United FC started as a community-benefit nonprofit corporation dedicated to establishing professional quality soccer in the Eugene/Springfield area. Our goal was to create a rallying point for the community of Lane County around great quality sports and family-friendly entertainment. With the support of you and our sponsors, and 100 percent volunteer labor we’ve done just that. That enthusiasm you showed allowed us to further build the brand, attract sponsors, etc., but it also showed potential investors that the support for high-level soccer in this area already existed. A group of local businessmen got together and formed Redside Sports LLC. and submitted to the league for a PDL franchise. Yesterday, the USL granted Redside Sports LLC a PDL franchise in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference for 2014.

What does this mean for LUFC? Well, this whole project was built on community involvement and the LUFC Members having a say in the club. Redside Sports is committed to that goal and has granted an ownership stake to the LUFC Members. Redside Sports will get the Lane United FC name and assorted logos etc., but the nonprofit will be turned over to the Members group and it is assumed will continue to function as a Supporters Trust.

Details of the final arrangements will be released as the two boards agree to them, but for now spread the word about Lane United, and if people ask, you can just tell them “We did it!”

A Loss, But a Beautiful First Night

Lane United dropped its inaugural friendly 3-0 against the tough Portland Timbers U-23 team. But the crowd and support were fantastic. As Lane United Coach Gabriel Hernandez told KEZI, “Anyone that looks at this crowd and says that this can’t happen here I think is crazy … There’s a lot of love for the game here.”

We want to thank the awesome Peter Bellerby of Northwest Sports Pics who shot photos of the game and kindly shared them with us. Here:

Lane United FC on Steve Tannen’s “Sports Talk”

Yesterday, Eugene radio host Steve Tannen featured Lane United FC on his show, “Sports Talk,” on 95.3 The Score. He interviewed Lane United board member Dan O’Brien about the club’s goals, soccer in the Northwest, and of course the first game tomorrow!

Steve was kind enough to share an audio file with us, so if you missed it, it will live here for posterity. It’s about 7 minutes long. And thanks, Steve, for having Dan on the show.
