Tracking the Boys in the NCAA this Fall

 

Butler Upsets No. 5 Indiana

The Bulldogs took down in-state rival Indiana by a 2-1 score last Tuesday night, playing to a crowd of 4,300. They dropped a 1-0 result to another ranked opponent — No. 9 St. John's — on the following Saturday. Griffin DeBolt (sophomore, def.) and Rhys Myers (junior, def.) started both matches in the back. They’ve played nearly every minute this season for Butler (4-4). Hemi Nasser (freshman, fwd.) also earned his fourth and fifth starts.

Bucks Score Four for Wright State

Bucks led the offense for Wright State (5-3) last Tuesday night in a 3-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne. Brayden McNitt (junior, mid.) scored in the 35th minute to tie the game, then Alec Philippe (senior, fwd.) scored twice. Stefan Rokvic (senior, mid.) was held off the scoresheet, but he would score the Raiders’ only goal Saturday night in a loss to Northern Kentucky.

Freshman Yosef Scores Two

Milo Yosef (redshirt freshman, fwd.) scored 48 seconds into the match, sparking Marshall University (6-1-1) to a 4-1 victory over Old Dominion. Yosef would add his second tally in the second half, bringing his team-high goals total to five. Pedro Dolabella (junior, mid.) tacked on an assist, while Jan-Erik Leinhos (sophomore, def.) made his eighth start.

Wolverines Hold Penn State Scoreless

The University of Michigan extended its unbeaten run to four matches (1-0-3), earning a 1-1 draw Friday night at the Nittany Lions. Four players from the Bucks started. Marc Ybarra (junior, mid.) took two shots in the match. Through eight games this year, he has three assists while averaging 93 minutes of playtime. Nebojsa Popovic (redshirt senior, fwd.) took three shots on goal. He has five goals and three assists, averaging 81 minutes. Umar Farouk Osman (junior, fwd.) has two assists, averaging 85 minutes. Kevin Buca (sophomore, mid.) is averaging 52 minutes on the field.

Pannenberg, Parente Keep Winning

No. 9 Wake Forest (8-1) got two more victories last week, with Andrew Pannenberg (redshirt sophomore, keep.) and Isaiah Parente (sophomore, mid.) starting in both. Pannenberg earned his fifth shutout Tuesday in a 1-0 win over Davidson. He followed up Saturday with five saves in a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 4 Clemson. Parente has started all nine matches, notching a goal and two assists.

Injured Spartans Return, Win

Patrick Nielsen (redshirt junior, def.) and Michael Wetungu (senior, def.) both saw the field last week for Michigan State after struggling with injuries.  The Spartans (1-5-2) finally broke through for a 3-0 win Friday over No. 22 Rutgers. Wetungu got his sixth start, logging 446 minutes. Nielsen made his first cameo midweek in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame. Giuseppe Barone (senior, mid.) remains sidelined with an injury.

Nolff, Borczak Connect for Oakland University

Spencer Nolff (senior, mid.) scored his first goal of the season Saturday night as the Golden Grizzlies (4-3-2) drew rival Detroit Mercy after two overtimes. Dylan Borczak (junior, mid.) got the assist for Oakland University’s only goal. Nolff and Borczak have started all nine games this season, with Elliot Bentley (senior, def.) also featuring in eight. Together, the trio has three goals and 10 assists.

Akron defeated by Cornell

The Zips dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Cornell on Saturday. Will Jackson (freshman, fwd.) has started consistently, logging 562 minutes. Colin Biros (sophomore, mid./fwd.), who earned his fifth start, has played 396 minutes.

Indianapolis Trumps Truman

Alejandro Steinwascher (sophomore, mid./fwd.) and the Greyhounds (4-1-1) notched a 3-0 win Friday night against Truman State University. Javier Steinwascher (senior, fwd.) remains on two goals and an assist, including a game-winner against Saginaw Valley State.

More Bucks in NCAA D-I

Justin Ingram (junior, mid.) at Loyola University Maryland: The Greyhounds (2-6) dropped two matches last week, with Ingram featuring in both. He’s averaging 50 minutes of playtime through eight matches.

Charlie Booth (redshirt senior, def.) at the University of Rhode Island: Booth started last Tuesday at Holy Cross but came off after 17 minutes and didn’t play in Saturday’s match due to probable injury.

Gustavo Vasconcelos (redshirt junior, keep.) at Florida Gulf Coast University: Vasconcelos made four saves in the second half Saturday night as a 10-man FGCU battled for a 1-1 draw. He’s logged 35 saves this season.

Tanguy Guerineau (redshirt senior, fwd.) at Oral Roberts University: Guerineau played 70 minutes Saturday in a 6-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne. He has six assists this year for the Golden Eagles (8-1).

Louis Sala (sophomore, mid.) at Northern Illinois University: The Huskies (4-4-1) won twice last week, with Sala totaling 48 minutes.

Leroy Enzugusi (junior, fwd.) at Drake University: Enzugusi notched his fourth goal and first assist last Wednesday in a 2-0 victory at Valparaiso. He’s averaging 3.67 shots through nine starts.

Others Around the Nation

Foster Appiah (senior, def.) at Florida Southern College (D-II): Appiah blocked several shots late as the Moccasins (2-2-3) held on for a 2-2 draw at Rollins last Wednesday night. He has started all seven games.

David Achaerandio (redshirt senior, fwd.) at Point Loma Nazarene University (D-II): Achaerandio scored his third goal of the season and assisted another, but his Sea Lions (4-3) fell twice last week.

Yuri Farkas Guglielmi (senior, fwd.) at Madonna University (NAIA): Farkas has four goals and an assist in four starts for the Crusaders (4-1-2).
