Match Preview: Lane United Host Cascadia Rival Seattle Sounders U-23s

June 10, 2016

EUGENE, Ore. — Nine days after playing Seattle Sounders U-23s in Washington, Lane United will host the Sounders U-23s at Willamalane on Sunday at 4pm. Last week’s game was a close-fought and controversial battle ending 2-1 in the Sounders’ favor after an injury time winner against the run of play in spite of the Reds being down a man for 20-odd minutes after Akeem Ward was sent off. The game started brightly for the Sounders who scored in the 3rd minute off the underside of the crossbar, but video evidence suggests the ball did not in fact cross the line.

Opting for a later start than most, Sunday’s match is one of nine games that the Sounders U-23s will play during the month of June, including a battle with local rivals Washington Crossfire tonight.

“This match against the Sounders U23’s could have significant playoff implications” said coach John Galas. “We had a tough match up in Sumner 9 days ago dropping points, so this game down here is of the utmost importance for us. We have had a good week of training, a quality Thursday night match vs South Sound FC, so I think our guys are in good rhythm and will be ready. We always match up well against them, and if we take our chances, manage the emotions and stay focused, I think we can get a result. We will need all our fans out in full force Sunday afternoon to pull us through this one.”

Fans can purchase tickets for the match online at laneunitedfc.com/tickets or at the gate. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6-12. Sunday’s game will feature food and beverage options from Chachi’s Burritos, Lani Moku Hawaiian Grill, and Oakshire Brewing. Lane United’s newly-expanded merchandise tent will also be available for fans looking to expand their LUFC wardrobe.

Match Preview: Lane United Heads to Washington for Two-Game Road Trip

June 3, 2016

EUGENE, Ore. — Lane United are back on the road this weekend with a two-game lineup in Washington. The Reds will begin the weekend by facing off against Seattle Sounders U-23s on Friday, June 3rd then will move on to face Washington Crossfire on Sunday, June 5th. The Reds are currently in third-place in the PDL Northwest Division, with 6 points for the season.

The Seattle Sounders U-23s had a late start to their 2016 PDL season, due to their participation in the U.S. Open Cup. Of the two league games they have played thus far, the Sounders U-23s have earned one win against Washington Crossfire and one loss against Kitsap Pumas. The Sounders will play nine games during the month of June to make up for the late start to their season.

Coach John Galas said, “Sounders U23 are, as usual, one of the top teams in the league. They are well coached, disciplined and organized defensively and will always be dangerous on the attack with Delgado up top. We haven’t had much luck on the road in last two years with the Sounders U23’s and we fully expect a tough match. They have quality and depth in every position, we will need to play extremely well to get a result on the road.”

Following their game on Friday, the Reds will have just one day of rest before taking on Washington Crossfire on Sunday at Lake Washington High School. Crossfire currently sits just ahead of Lane United in the Northwest Division table with seven points to Lane United’s six. Washington also faces a two-game weekend with their first match taking place on Friday against Portland Timbers U-23s.

“Crossfire are another tough group in this extremely competitive league” said Galas. “They have had some great early results, and we fully expect them to come at us. They do play the Timbers U23’s on the Friday night, so perhaps we’ll see a different group than the one we have scouted, but nonetheless, they will be as competitive as anyone in this NW Division.”
