Lane United Earns First Home Win of the Season Against South Sound FC
Lane United earned their first home win of the season tonight in a non-league friendly match against South Sound FC. The visiting team was composed of Evergreen Premier League of Washington club, South Sound FC as well as some guest players from PDL clubs, the Kitsap Pumas and Seattle Sounders U-23s. The friendly format of the game allowed LUFC coach John Galas to experiment with his team’s lineup which resulted in fans seeing some new faces among the Lane United starters. Aidan Johnson, Riggs Lennon, and Sam Tweeton all saw their first start for the Reds this season.
From the first, Lane United controlled the tempo of the game with midfielder Aidan Johnson taking an early shot from the top of the box that was deflected by the South Sound goalkeeper for a corner kick. The Reds continued to apply pressure to the South Sound squad with Nathan Braaten and Ismael Fernandez recording multiple shots in the first half. The payoff came just before halftime when Rolando Velazquez sent the ball into the center of the box where LUFC newcomer Riggs Lennon was waiting to head it into the back of South Sound’s net. Red smoke once again filled the air at Willamalane as the Red Aces celebrated the Red’s first home goal of the season in their usual style. The Reds went into the locker room at halftime ahead 1-0.
After the half, South Sound came out revitalized and seemed about to even the score when their #23 suddenly found the ball at his feet two yards away from Lane United’s wide open goal. However, Dirk van der Velde came flying into the box and made an incredible block that cleared the ball out of the danger zone and set South Sound up for a corner kick. South Sound had few chances after that with both teams unable to create many real goal-scoring opportunities. Both teams saw more fouls during the second half but could not convert set pieces into a threat on goal. The rain also picked up significantly in the second half, soaking all of the players and fans at the game. But for the Lane United faithful, sitting in the rain was a small price to pay to see the Reds earn their first home win of the 2016 season. Lane United’s next home game will take place on Sunday, June 12th at 4:00 PM at the Willamalane Center for Sports and Recreation. The Reds will take on the Seattle Sounders U-23s exactly nine days after losing to them 2-1 on the road in Washington.
