Lane United Hosts FC Cougars in Second Friendly

May 18, 2017

EUGENE — Lane United faces local Liga Unida side FC Cougars Friday night at 7:30pm in the second home friendly of the 2017 season at the Les Schwab Sports Park.

LUFC will feature their special Eugene Civic Alliance kits for the fourth and last time of the season Friday night, all of which will be auctioned off at the Official Kit Launch party on June 1 as a fundraiser for Eugene Civic Alliance and the Stadium at Civic Park, the future home of the Reds. The match will also include a Eugene Civic Alliance 50/50 raffle with funds going to support the Stadium at Civic Park Project.

The Reds return home after their first PDL trip of the season where they secured an away point in a 2-2 draw with TSS FC Rovers Friday at Swangard in Burnaby, before falling to Victoria Highlanders FC 4-1 on Sunday.

Getting a point on the road is a good start to the league season, but the team wasn’t happy with the way they performed in the defeat to Highlanders FC.

“We left Canada with a horrible feeling in dropping three points to Victoria, so the boys have been really wanting to train and improve this week,” head coach John Galas said. “We’ve trained with great energy, focus and commitment while also showing great attitude all week.”

Galas plans for a number of players to see time on the field Friday as he continues to experiment with different lineups and combinations in search of the right fit as the PDL season resumes next week.

Lane United will be closer to full strength this week as four more players arrived in town and have been training with the club.

Forward/midfielder Brandon Zambrano from the University of Portland, goalkeeper Ximo Miralles from Clemson University, midfielder Isaiah Jackson from Gonzaga University, and midfielder Hernan Ramos from the University of Texas at Dallas all could see the field for their first action with the Reds against FC Cougars.

“We are approaching full numbers with the addition of Brandon, Isaiah and Hernan, who have all shown well in training this week,” Galas said. “That said, Sam Buzzas won’t feature Friday as he’s still recovering from the knock he took in the first half at TSS last week. I think the boys are excited to play tomorrow night.”

Established in 2007, FC Cougars are led by head coach Juan Gonzalez and play in the local Liga Unida. Although it’s just a friendly, FC Cougars will provide the Reds with strong competition that will help prepare them for next Friday’s home PDL opener against TSS FC Rovers.

“FC Cougars will be a tough test for us and we must approach the game with the same intensity, attitude and energy we would a PDL match,” Galas said. “I’m excited to see us play in front of our home crowd and welcome FC Cougars to yet another match in which we get to see some great local talent in the Eugene-Springfield communities.”
