Match Preview: Lane United Host Calgary Foothills in Two-Night Double-Header

June 16, 2016

EUGENE, Ore. — Four days after an eventful win against the Seattle Sounders U-23s, Lane United will play the first of a a two-night double-header against Calgary Foothills FC on Thursday night. The Reds earned a second home win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Sounders U-23s. A frenetic first five minutes saw an LUFC goal and a Sounders red card. A twice-taken Seattle penalty saw two saves from Luis Barazza, the second of which was bundled over for an equalizer before Matt Coffey took over the game and put it out of reach with goals late in the first and halfway through the second half.

Lane United look to continue their two-game winning streak as they face PDL Northwest Division top dogs, Calgary Foothills FC. Calgary have been in impressive form thus far this season with a 4-1-1 record. Most recently however, against the Victoria Highlanders on June 12th, they fell to a 2-2 draw with a late equalizer from the Highlanders’ Blair Sturrock.

The Lane United double-header is the first two of five games in a ten-day crunch for division-leading Calgary. After Lane United, they will travel to Portland to play the Timbers U-23s on Sunday, then host Kitsap for a two-game series on the 24th and 26th of June.

“These two games should make for great entertainment for our fans” said LUFC Head Coach John Galas. “Calgary are first in our division, we are sitting second. It really doesn’t get better than this. The sad part is we have to play back to back, which was decided by the league in December. Having said that, I know Calgary have quality from top to bottom and will travel with a group fully expecting to collect six points on the road. They have been in great form, picking off teams left and right. We’ll need a solid performance on both sides of the ball to get results against the top team in the Division. There’s really no pressure on us, we just have to go out and play, stay focused and compete. I’m excited to welcome Calgary back to Springfield again this year. Coach Wheeldon has done an exceptional job building his program up north and it will be a great test.”

Lane United is excited to to present a special Thursday night for Cascadia Wildlands. Cascadia WIldlands is a local grassroots conservation organization known for its innovative and effective campaigns which educate, agitate, and inspire a movement to protect and restore Cascadia’s wild ecosystems. The special evening will feature halftime entertainment by local Afro-Brazilian drumming group, Samba Ja, Canadian and American national anthems sung by local recording artist Emily Jensen, and the home-unveiling of the new Cascadia-themed Lane United away kits. Food carts will be supplied by Lani Moku Hawaiian Grill on Thursday, and Navarro’s Latin Creole Kitchen on Friday, with Oakshire Beer and Atlas Cider flowing both nights.

Tickets can be purchased at laneunitedfc.com/tickets and to celebrate the start of summer vacation, kids 12 and under get in FREE to Friday night’s game!
