Slow Start, Missed Call Hurt Reds in Loss at Timbers U23
Lane United pressed hard for a second half equalizer in its second match in three days against their in-state PDL rival to the north Portland Timbers U23 Saturday.
Forward Jordan Jones had a chance in the 87th minute before he was taken out from the back and side by two Timbers defenders in what looked like a sure penalty, but it wasn’t called.
Just a minute later Timbers U23 would find a second goal and add a third after a penalty was called on the Reds in stoppage time, ultimately handing Lane United a 3-0 defeat at McCulloch Stadium in Salem.
A tough pill to swallow for a side that was close to finding a late equalizer and taking a point on the road.
“It’s unfortunate the penalty wasn’t seen or called,” Lane United head coach John Galas said. “It certainly changed the game. A minute later they score, and then a penalty was called against us. It’s a shame the level of refereeing doesn’t match the quality on the field.”
Lane United played a sloppy first 45 that led to conceding the first goal. Coach Galas cited careless turnovers and lack of communication, both problems that have been achilles heel’s for LUFC at times throughout the season.
“Our patience and control of possession in the second half was great,” Galas said. “Unfortunately we didn’t start out well. You have to play a complete game in this league.”
The Reds (5-4-4 Overall, 2-4-4 PDL) will have to regroup after suffering two defeats at the hands of Portland this week, but have all four league matches remaining on the schedule at home.
Getting back on track starts with two matches in three days against Victoria Highlanders FC Thursday and Saturday. Lane United will look for revenge against Victoria after falling 4-1 on the road in May, the lone previous match of the season.
Sitting in fourth place, there are points to be had against teams ahead of Lane United in the table. One match at a time will be a key to start earning those points and begin moving up.
