Starphire FC Visit for Third 2017 Friendly
Lane United looks to continue its 2017 dominance at home as Southern Oregon Starphire visit the Les Schwab Sports Park for a 7pm Tuesday kickoff in a quick break from the PDL schedule.
The Reds (4-2-2 overall, 2-2-2 PDL) are undefeated on the home pitch through the first four matches of the season, outscoring opponents by a combined 15-2 mark. The last a 4-1 victory over current PDL Northwest Division second place team Seattle Sounders U-23.
Coming off a tough return trip to Seattle Friday where Sounders U-23 got revenge in a 3-0 victory, Lane United will try to get back to what’s been working at home. Scoring first and applying continuous pressure on opposing sides.
Goals have come early and often at home as LUFC has scored at least three each time out, while allowing just the two in return. A mid-week friendly will allow the Reds to get a number of players minutes and help a few others heal up some nagging injuries.
“We will be able to play a lot of players tonight which is what we want,” Lane United head coach John Galas said. “We need to get a few guys some minutes, and keep them in rhythm.”
The Reds will look to use a strong performance Tuesday as a springboard towards a weekend trip to PDL NW Division leader Calgary Foothills FC. The longest trip of the season that features two games in three days against a very good opponent.
“With a tough weekend ahead of us in Calgary, we will spread the minutes out throughout about 20 guys tonight,” Galas said. “We’re looking forward to playing in front our fans again tonight against a very good opponent in the Starphire. It will be a good test for us.”
Southern Oregon Starphire FC is in its first season of play in the Pacific Premier League. Originally known as the Southern Oregon Fuego, the club was one of two teams to play Lane United in its 2013 exhibition series, along with the Timbers U23’s after the Reds secured their PDL franchise. Fuego competed in the NPSL in 2009 and 2010, making the divisional playoffs in their season after posting a 4-7-1 record and finishing fourth in the Western Division.
The Starphire are 2-1-0 through three PPL matches on the season, including a 2-1 win over Chico City Rangers FC and a 3-2 victory over Redding Royals 2.
