Where to Watch the Reds During the 2014 College Season
Lane United FC, like the Premier Development League as a whole, is largely populated by collegiate players, many of whom will be active on their teams in the upcoming fall NCAA season. Several Reds, including a large contingent from Oregon State University, are based in the Northwest and will play within a reasonable distance of Eugene, should fans want to go and support some of their favorites in the next phase of their playing careers.
“This is a great way to support not only the guys, but the sport of soccer in general,” said Lane United coach John Galas. “In addition to watching MLS matches, European league fixtures, Champions Leagues, its rewarding to watch our local clubs and players as well. There’s some great play out thereat the collegiate level, and you can cheer on the OSU boys up in Corvallis.”
The Oregon State Beavers team (click link for schedule) will feature six 2014 Lane United players: Matt Arbogast, Mikhail Doholis, Brenden Anderson, Matt Bersano, Khiry Shelton and incoming freshman Rolando Velazquez. Home games are on the natural grass pitch at Lorenz Field in Corvallis. The Pac-12 season starts in October, although a home preseason tournament, the Nike Portland Invite, will counterintuitively feature matches in Corvallis the weekend of August 29-31, and other non-conference fixtures take place all throughout September. A matchup with plenty of Lane United intrigue will take place on Thursday, October 23 when San Diego State, featuring Reds defensive stalwarts Julio Alarcon and Casey Phillips, comes to town.
The University of Portland, featuring recent SLU transfer and Oregon native Dirk van der Velde, plays its home fixtures at Merlo Field in north Portland. The historically strong Pilots outfit competes in the West Coast Conference, although they will travel to Corvallis to face Oregon State in an out-of-conference match on Thurdsay, September 18.
The Gonzaga men’s team makes only one journey into Oregon, to play Portland on Sunday, October 12. Conner Bevans — the Reds’ leader or joint leader in goals, shots, assists and fouls — will likely play, as will Chris Lowrimore, who featured in goal for Lane United all season long.
